Serving as a Reader (Minster of the Word)
Serving as a Reader (Minister of the Word) is a beautiful and sacred way to participate at Mass. Readers proclaim the Word of God at the Mass in a clear, persuasive way and with interpretive emphasis so that the faithful may discover anew God's Word, alive in our parish. Parishioners high school age and up are encouraged to serve.
Those who serve should have a living, growing relationship with Jesus, regularly receiving the Eucharist, going to Confession, and in good standing with the Catholic Church.To serve as an Reader, the pastor asks for a commitment to:
- Being a Catholic in good standing (see below)
- Active participation in the life of the parish
- Reverence and devotion for the holy Scripture - showing deep respect through your behavior, attire, and reciting of the Word of God.
Being a Catholic in good standing means:
- Fully initiated in the Church: baptized, confirmed, and received the Eucharist
- Attend Mass regularly, receiving the Eucharist, and going to confession regularly
- Strive to follow the teachings of the Church in your daily life.
- Marriage Status: If you are married, your marriage should be recognized by the Church. If divorced and remarried, your previous marriage should be annulled and your current marriage acknowledged by the Church.

Reader (Minister of the Word) Training
Reading Scripture at Mass is an important part of the liturgy. As a Reader, you help the congregation hear and reflect on the Word of God. Because of the importance of this role, training ensures that we approach it with clarity and confidence.
All new Readers are required to attend a training session (offered privately). We also ask returning Readers to participate in an annual group training. This is a helpful way to stay refreshed on best practices and stay connected with others who serve in this ministry.
