THE FIRST STATION
Jesus is condemned to death

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)

Matthew 27:22-23,26  Pilate said to them, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah? “ All of them said, “Let him be crucified!  “Then he asked, “Why, what evil has he done? “But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!” So he released Barabbas for them; and after flogging Jesus, he handed him over to be crucified.

Cantor:  
Stabat mater dolorosa,
iuxta crucem lacrimosa,
dum pendebat Filius.

All:
At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last.


 

THE SECOND STATION
Jesus takes up his Cross

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)

Matthew 27:27-31 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters, and they gathered the whole cohort around him. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and after twisting some thorns into a crown, they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.  After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.

All:
Through her heart, His sorrow sharing,
all His bitter anguish bearing,
now at length the sword has passed.


 

THE THIRD STATION
Jesus falls for the first time 

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Isaiah 53:4-6  Surely he has born our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that made us whole, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

O how sad and sore distressed
was that Mother, highly blest,
of the sole-begotten One.

THE FOURTH STATION
Jesus meets his Mother

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Luke 2:34-35,51 Simon blessed them and said to Mary his mother: “Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is spoken against (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed”. And his mother kept all these things in her heart.

Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.

THE FIFTH STATION
The Cyrenian helps Jesus carry the Cross

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Matthew 27:32; 16:24 As they went out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they compelled to carry his cross. Jesus told his disciples, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.”

matrem Christi si videret in tanto supplicio?

Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ's dear Mother to behold?

THE SIXTH STATION
Veronica wipes the face of Jesus

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Isaiah. 53:2-3 He had no form or comeliness that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 

Psalms 27:8-9 You have said, “Seek my face”. My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek”. Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation.

Bruised, derided, cursed, defiled,
she beheld her tender Child
All with bloody scourges rent.

THE SEVENTH STATION
Jesus falls for the second time

Lamentations. 3:1-2,9,16 I am the man who has seen affliction under the rod of his wrath; he has driven and brought me into darkness without any light. He has blocked my way with hewn stones, he has made my paths crooked. He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes.

Christi matrem contemplari,

Can the human heart refrain
from partaking in her pain,
in that Mother's pain untold?


 

THE EIGHTH STATION
Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Luke 23:28-31 Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never gave suck!’ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’; and to the hills, ‘Cover us’, For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

THE NINTH STATION
Jesus falls for the third time

Lamentations 3:27-32 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone in silence when he has laid it on him; let him put his mouth in the dust - there may yet be hope; let him give his cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults. For the Lord will not cast off forever, but, though he cause grief, he will have compassion, according to the abundance of his steadfast love.

THE TENTH STATION
Jesus is stripped of his garments

Matthew 27:33-36 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means the place of a skull), they offered him wine to drink, mingled with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots; then they sat down and kept watch over him there.

THE ELEVENTH STATION
Jesus is nailed to the Cross

All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Matthew 27:37-42 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus the King of the Jews”. Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right hand and one on the left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the Cross”. So also the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the Cross and we will believe in him”.

THE TWELFTH STATION
Jesus dies on the Cross

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

John 19:19-20 Pilate also wrote a title and put it on the Cross; it read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”. Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. 

Matthew 27:45-50,54 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” That is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “This man is calling Elijah”. And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink. But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him”. And Jesus cried again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Let me mingle tears with thee,
mourning Him who mourned for me,
all the days that I may live.

THE THIRTEENTH STATION
Jesus is taken down from the Cross

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Matthew 27:54-55  When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe, and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” There were also many women there, looking on from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.

Vidit suum dulcem Natum morientem,
desolatum, cum emisit spiritum.

All:  
For the sins of His own nation,
saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His spirit forth He sent.

THE FOURTEENTH STATION
Jesus is laid in the tomb

We adore you O Christ and we praise you. (kneel)
All: For by your holy cross you redeemed the world (rise)

Matthew 27:59-61 Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.

Quando corpus morietur,
fac ut animæ donetur paradisi gloria. Amen.

All:  
While my body here decays,
may my soul Thy goodness praise,
safe in paradise with Thee. Amen.

BLESSING

The Lord be with you.

Give that to the Lord for he is good.
All:   His mercy endures forever.
